The author is a Peace Corps volunteer who helped assist the joint mission between Global Smile Foundation and Jooko Cleft Association.
"At the beginning of November I was given the honor of working with a group of thirteen American doctors and nurses from the Global Smile Foundation who came to Barthimee Hospital in Thies to do cleft lip surgeries. In just four short days they were able to completely transform the faces (and lives) of thirty patients, from infants to adults, as well as provide additional training to a group of Senegalese doctors who perform cleft surgery locally. As a Peace Corps volunteer my role was to translate between the American staff and the Senegalese patients and families, as well as . . ."
Mission Update: Esmeraldas, Ecuador
In collaboration with the Ecuadorian Navy in Esmeraldas, GSF screened 46 patients and performed 36 corrective surgical procedures on 25 patients.
The procedures included cleft lip and palate repairs, cleft lip and palate revisions, rhinoplasties, excisions, a tongue release, and lip deformity corrections. In addition, GSF provided 25 psychosocial consultations for families. There were zero complications and wonderful outcomes from the mission.
