Global Craniofacial Fellowship
in Pediatric Dentistry
In line with Global Smile Foundation’s vision and on-going efforts to provide comprehensive and multi-disciplinary cleft care to our underserved patient population, and to train local healthcare providers to ensure long term sustainability and empowerment, we are pioneering the first global craniofacial pediatric dentistry fellowship.
The one-year fellowship in Craniofacial Pediatric Dentistry at New York University Langone Medical Center Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery (NYULMC IRPS) trains pediatric dentists in managing infants born with cleft lip/palate and craniofacial anomalies. A training period of 9 months will be conducted at NYULMC IRPS, along with a 3 months training at one of Global Smile Foundation’s (GSF) partner sites in South America.
During the period spent at NYULMC IRPS, the Fellow will:
- Participate in weekly cleft and craniofacial seminars
- Be actively involved with cleft team members in the interdisciplinary activities
- Develop an understanding that is needed to participate in or establish a similar cleft team at their own institute.
- Be trained to acquire the necessary skills to manage and treat all aspects of cleft and craniofacial deformities from infancy through adolescence including:
- Pre-surgical treatment using Nasoalveolar Molding (NAM)
- Preventive dentistry
- Interceptive orthodontics
- Orthodontics
- Surgical orthodontics.
- The Fellow will have ample opportunity to use advanced diagnostic imaging tools such as CBCT, CT and 3D MD during the fellowship experience.
The Fellow in Craniofacial Pediatric Dentistry will be expected to perform a clinically based research study during the 12 months fellowship and will have complete access to the extensive clinical records of NYULMC IRPS, with close supervision and guidance from the faculty.
The duration of training conducted at a GSF partner site in Latin America is for 3 months. During this period, the fellow is expected to treat pre-selected infants born with cleft lip and palate deformities utilizing NAM before their primary surgical repair. The fellow will also be responsible for training local healthcare professionals to adopt pre-surgical NAM therapy at their centers and provide the same continuity of care for the following years.
Overall, the fellowship aims at producing proficient and scientifically adept craniofacial pediatric dentists who are capable of diagnosing and managing all types of pediatric patients born with cleft and craniofacial anomalies.
