Edwin Ellseo Osorio
Age: 3 months
San Salvador, El Salvador
Edwin Eliseo Osorio was 3 months old when he arrived at the Benjamin Bloom Hospital in San Salvador accompanied by his mother, Morena Cardon. It did not take long for people to realize that Edwin was a baby who simply loved to smile. In fact, he was one of the happiest babies at the hospital, and for vthat reason, he attracted a lot of attention. Edwin’s mother brought him from their home in Ahuachapan, two hours away from the hospital. She wanted the Global Smile Foundation to operate on her son who was born with a cleft lip deformity.
At home, Edwin has two older brothers. His father is a farmer with very limited means. Edwin’s mother wants her son to look good and to be accepted by the society. She has always worried about what will happen when Edwin gets older and what other people will say to him. She heard of the Global Smile Foundation through the Benjamin Bloom Hospital. She is filled with guilt and thinks Edwin was born this way because she ate or drank something bad when she was pregnant.
When it came time for surgery, it was hard to take Edwin from his mother’s arms. She had tears in her eyes and her face was filled with worry. After reassuring her that everything was going to be OK, she seemed to relax a bit. When Edwin came out of the operating room, his mother was filled with joy and she was impressed with the high quality of the surgical results. She could not thank the Global Smile Foundation enough for all they have done for Edwin. As she walked next to him while he was being rolled away, Edwin looked up at his mother and gave her a huge smile.
